THREATS TO THE FAST FOOD RESTAURANTS

Industry threats

Industry threats are related to an increase in the competition in our industry or a reduction in market size. Generally industry threats threaten to reduce your businesses profitability.
Some possible Industry Threats include :-http://matcuoi.com
  • Low cost imports, the threat of low cost imports affects almost any manufacturer in the developed world, with the possible exception of food manufacturing.
  • Consumer ability to shift to a substitute product and changing demand for substitute products, consider the manufacture of nails used in the assembly of house frames, if housing developers shifted from timber frames to steel framed houses, demand for nails would drop significantly.
  • Slow market growth or decline in market size, western countries the demand for alcoholic drinks remains pretty flat.
  • Shifts in customer or supplier buying power reducing your margins, consolidation in the retail industry has shifted buying power to the retailer who can place suppliers for generic products under high price pressure.
  • The changing needs of buyers, (customers), take the McDonalds fast food chain as an example, Faced the threat of Australian customer needs changing towards a healthier life style. In response to this threat McDonalds has introduced several healthy eating options.

Ok, that's all from me for today!

OPPORTUNITY OF FAST FOOD RESTAURANTS

Most fast food restaurants service jobs are entry level and require a high school diploma or less. Generally, training is received on the job. However, those who wish to work at more upscale restaurants, where income from tips is greater and service standards are higher, may need previous experience or vocational training.
1. Education and training  http://matcuoi.com
There are no specific educational requirements for most fast food restaurant service jobs. Many employers prefer to hire high school graduates for waiter and waitress, bartender, and host and hostess positions, but completion of high school usually is not required for fast-food workers, counter attendants, dishwashers, and dining room attendants and bartender helpers. Many entrants to these jobs are in their late teens or early twenties and have a high school education or less. Usually, they have little or no work experience. Fast food restaurants service jobs are major source of part-time employment for high school and college students, multiple job holders, and those seeking supplemental incomes.
All new employees receive some training from their employer. For example, they learn safe food handling procedures and sanitation practices. Some employers, particularly those in fast-food restaurants, teach new workers using self-study programs, on-line programs, audiovisual presentations, and instructional booklets that explain food preparation and service skills. These training programs communicate the operating philosophy of the restaurant, teach formal serving techniques, and instill a desire to work as a team. They also provide an opportunity to discuss customer service situations and the proper ways to handle unpleasant circumstances or unruly patrons.
2. Other qualifications http://matcuoi.com
Usually fast food restaurants rely on good food and customer service to retain loyal customers and succeed in a competitive industry. Fast food restaurants serving and related workers who exhibit excellent personal qualities such as a neat appearance, an ability to work as part of a team, and a natural rapport with customers will be highly sought after.
Waiters and waitresses need a good memory to avoid confusing customers' orders and to recall faces, names, and preferences of frequent patrons. Knowledge of a foreign language can be helpful to communicate with a diverse clientele and staff.
3. Advancement
Due to the relatively small size of most food-serving establishments, opportunities for promotion are limited. After gaining experience, some dining room and cafeteria attendants and bartender helpers advance to waiter, waitress, or bartender jobs. For waiters, waitresses, and bartenders, advancement usually is limited to finding a job in a busier or more expensive restaurant or bar where prospects for tip earnings are better. Some bartenders, hosts and hostesses, and waiters and waitresses advance to supervisory jobs, such as dining room supervisor, maitre d', assistant manager, or restaurant general manager. A few bartenders open their own businesses. In larger restaurant chains, food and beverage service workers who excel often are invited to enter the company's formal management training program.

DISADVANTAGES OF FAST FOOD RESTAURANTS

In the United States, people eat fast food far too often, because it's convenient and cheap. However, there are a host of disadvantages associated with eating fast food. It is not necessary to boycott all fast food restaurants, but it's important to limit how often you eat at them. There are many disadvantages of fast food but I will explain a few of them. It is :-

1. Obesity  http://matcuoi.com

According to a study done at Berkeley University in 2009, the closer people live to a fast food restaurant, the higher their risk is of becoming obese. Additionally, it was found that the more fast food restaurants there were near a person's home, the more likely he was to be obese. One of the main reasons that fast food is fattening is because cooking oil is used in many of the foods to preserve their shelf life. If you're watching your weight, it's a better idea to cook healthy meals at home.

2. Heart Attack Risk

Another problem associated with eating fast food involves the type of fat that is used in fast food restaurants. According to "New Scientist" magazine, items such as french fries and chicken nuggets from many fast food chains use trans fat, an artery-clogging fat used as a stabilizer in food processing. "New Scientist" explains that consuming trans fat can raise your cholesterol levels and dramatically increase your risk of heart attacks.

3. Liver Damage  http://matcuoi.com

A less commonly known yet still dangerous side effect of eating fast food is liver damage. ABC News explains that eating high-fat foods from fast food restaurants can overload the liver and eventually lead to liver damage. Dr. Christine Ballantyne of the Center for Cardiovascular Disease Prevention at the Methodist DeBakey Heart Center told ABC News that eating too much fast food over a period of time can actually damage the liver as much or more than drinking alcohol.

4. Environmental Impact

The New Community Project, a nonprofit environmental awareness organization, states that fast food restaurants contribute major damage to the environment each year. To make 1 lb. of hamburger, for example, it takes 16 lbs. of grains and up to 2,500 gallons of water. The New Community Project states that if more people ate a plant-based diet, there would be more food and water to feed people all around the world. They go on to say that some of the meat used in fast food restaurants in the United States is raised in South America, and rainforests had to be cut down to make room for the cattle.

ADVANTAGES OF FAST FOOD RESTAURANTS

Fast food normally served at a counter or drive-thru window within minutes of placing an order. Fast food establishments typically do not employ wait staff. Customers simply seat themselves after ordering. So, the advantages of fast food are :-
1. Fast Food Saves Time  http://matcuoi.com
  • Fast food saves time in today's fast-paced society. People can order fast food on their way to or from work, without ever leaving their car. Fast food is also designed to come in small packaging so that people can consume it while traveling.

2. Light on the Wallet

  • Eating fast food can save a lot of money for large families, students and anyone else looking to eat out without breaking the bank. Many fast food chains offer discount menus with foods costing a dollar or less. Customers also avoid having to leave a tip when they choose a fast food establishment over a typical restaurant.
    3. Getting Healthier   http://matcuoi.com
Many fast food places now offer healthier options to keep up with popular demand. In addition to typical fast food favorites such as burgers and fries, most fast food places now offer healthy alternatives such as salads, grilled chicken, yogurt, fruit and wraps.

4. Popular Places to Find Fast Food Restaurants

  • Some of the most popular fast food chains include McDonald's, KFC, Burger King, Subway and Dunkin' Donuts.

HISTORY OF FAST FOOD RESTAURANTS

One of the great pioneers of the fast food industry was a man named Carl Karcher. He was a farm boy who grew up in Ohio, but at the age of 24, he moved to Anaheim, California, to work at his uncle’s factory.  In 1939, Carl wanted to go into business for himself and purchased a hot dog cart and began his “curb service” of selling hot dogs on the street to customers as they drove up in their cars. Because this was during the time that automobiles were so popular, people did not want to have to get out of their cars to eat and Carl’s business flourished. Before long, he was opening a drive-in restaurant called “Carl’s Drive-In Barbeque”.

During this time the two brothers Richard and Maurice McDonald left their home in New Hampshire seeking jobs in southern California. First they tried opening a theater but it was not a success. Then they caught on to the new craze of eating at drive-in restaurants and opened one in 1939, in Pasadena, California, calling it “McDonald’s Famous Hamburgers”. The McDonald brothers grew tired of having to hire new carhops and short-order cooks all the time, so at the end of the 1940’s, they fired everyone. They even decided that they were tired of replacing glassware, dishes and silverware so they closed the restaurant and re-opened with a “new” McDonald’s, one that did not require any dishes, silverware or glasses. Everything switched over to paper and plastic. There was no longer a need for short-order cooks as each employee hired only had to learn one specific task, for example make the French fries or make the burgers or get the drinks, and so on. Food was made with a “Speedee Service System” designed by the McDonald brothers and it revolutionized the restaurant business. They advertised the benefits of their system as “Imagine, No Carhops, No Waitresses, No Dishwashers, No Bus Boys and the McDonald’s System is Self-Service!”.  http://matcuoi.com

Because of this “Speedee Service System” that the McDonald Brothers created, entrepreneurs from all over the country went to the new McDonald’s in California to see how the restaurant operated. Then they went home and built imitation restaurants of their own, for example, Burger King, Taco Bell, Wendy’s Old-Fashioned Hamburgers, Dunkin’ Donuts, Kentucky Friend Chicken (KFC) and so on. The number of new restaurants was countless. Even Carl Karcher, the man who began with one hot dog cart, opened his own fast food chain too, known as Carl Jr.’s.

Because of the dreams that men like Carl Karcher and the McDonald Brothers had about being in business for themselves and starting their own restaurants, fast food evolved. Ray Kroc is now the owner of McDonald’s and he made the restaurant known not only within the United States but also all over the world.
